Video from Birmingham Arrests

· Posted 17/02/09 by Danielle

The footage shot on several cameras at Parker High School was compiled into a series of clips showing significant episodes prior to and during the arrests.

Watch the video here.

Approximate video timeline:

1:00 – An officer tells one of the Survivors (holding literature) that they will be arrested for trespassing because they are “on school property”.

1:30 – Several students walk up to a sign and look closely at the diagrams and fact sheets, discussing abortion.

2:15 – Lahoci is told that he is on school property (even though he’s clearly standing outside the school, on the grass between the sidewalk and the street), and Shara challenges the police officer to explain why the Survivors were targeted for their message and activities.

3:00 – In response to a Survivor’s question about the ownership of the property on which they stand, a police officer says “Let me get the president (principal of the school?)... and once he confirms it’s his property, y’all gotta leave.” The police didn’t know if it was school property or not?

3:20 – Lahoci is asked by an officer, “you going to go to the other side of the street, sir?” to which he responds, “no, sir” and he is arrested.

4:10 – Joe picks up Lahoci’s signs and continues to reach out to passing students (notice that throughout this event, there is background chatter as students see our signs and talk with Survivors and amongst themselves about abortion). He is arrested.

4:20 – Tara distributes literature and has a conversation with two young girls about abortion, one of whom mentions that her sister is scheduled for an abortion (Tara was able to get in contact with her sister after the arrests, and hopefully a life will be spared).

5:30 – Kortney speaks with an officer, and he tells her that the sidewalk is not public property, at least “not right now” (when there are pro-life people on the property?).

6:45 – Bud (with Tara videotaping the officer) is told “you are trespassing”, to which he responds, “ what’s that penal code?” and is given no code by the officer.

8:18 – Tara tries to clarify with Officer Allison why the other members of the team were arrested, and he responds that they were “detained” for “disorderly conduct” and failure to obey a “lawful order to disperse”. Funny how that turned into arrests with the charge of criminal trespass.

9:15 – Officer reiterates that the Survivors are “trespassing” and tells them they have to leave, but continues to refuse Tara’s request for a penal code number. The police then arrest Tara, even though she was simply standing by and filming the event.

What do you think? Were the Survivors trespassing in your opinion, or not?

Comment

No. The Survivors were not trespassing. It is public property.

This just shows America’s lack of understanding of the Constitution and the protection it provides. Know your rights….thanks Survivors.
