Young Leaders in Action

Trained up and motivated, we took our knowledge to the beach! Some of the most engaging events we had during camp were die-ins and show-the-truth pickets at Huntington, Laguna, Venice, and Santa Monica beaches in Southern California. These events are some of the most effective of the pro-life outreaches I’ve participated in because people are surprised with your presence at a place they weren’t expecting you. Whether it’s a good surprise or a bad surprise for them, it provides a perfect opportunity to educate a lot of people about abortion. Using pictures, physical demonstrations, and our voices, the Survivors taught thousands of the gathering people about abortion.

A handful of Survivors volunteered to talk on the bullhorn to the crowd as the rest of the group laid down in curled fetal positions to represent over fifty million lives lost to abortion. People saw a bunch of teenagers laying on the ground and one projecting their voice through a bullhorn, and they couldn’t help but come closer to see what we were doing. New Survivors were able to test their courage and knowledge by using the bullhorn to tell people about abortion. It’s no easy task for anyone to talk on the bullhorn to the crowd. For me, it’s one of those moments where I feel very small compared to everything else around, yet I pull myself up and make it work for the babies that are dying every 24 seconds. Many brave campers were willing to try using the bullhorn for the first time. Even when it was hard they persevered. The information they gave to the crowd caused people to stop and ask questions about abortion while they looked at our signs of aborted babies. Other Survivors youth handed out literature to the crowd as they listened to our message. Others stood with signs to teach people about abortion procedures, fetal development, and other aspects of abortion in order to change the hearts of those who support abortion, and to better educate those who do not. I always appreciate it when parents bring their children to our signs to teach them about the babies who are being murdered. It never takes them many words to explain what it is, or that it’s wrong, because children understand both so easily.

At the beaches all of the Survivors were more then willing to lie down on the hot cement, in 90-degree weather, for the die-ins. They understood that it engaged people around to want to learn more about abortion. When we weren’t holding die-ins at the beach, we were teaching people about abortion with our signs, literature, and knowledge. Show The Truth signs spread across the boardwalk for everyone who walked by to see. Survivors engaged in many conversations, and made huge impacts on how people view abortion.

We had the opportunity at camp to not only attend these great events, but also learn how to lead them. Anyone interested in being an event leader had the opportunity to run events with the guidance of the camp leaders. We learned what we needed so that one day we can successfully host our own events. We were also trained in vital police liaison work at camp. When the police would show up to talk to us about our event or to ask us to move, there was always a designated Survivor ready to act as police liason with the officer. The police liaison made sure the Survivor’s right’s were clear, and communicated we were willing to comply with the officers, when necessary, to make the police officer’s job easier.

What an amazing opportunity camp outreaches were for us to learn the many versatile skills we need to be active participants in the pro-life movement. We were trained as leaders and warriors for the unborn, knowing our rights and using them to communicate the truth about the horror of abortion.
